National Middle Schools’ Forum Newsletter

Autumn 2005

1) Conference 2005  -  Schools for the Future

First come first served - There are a limited number of places available at the National Conference next month. Please contact Jackie Batten (see below)

19 – 21 October 2005,

Corus Hotel, Bristol  (Easily accessible from M5, Airport and Rail Station)

This year’s conference will look to the future, exploring how leadership will need to respond to the Governments five year strategy and ‘Every Child Matters’.  We will examine the Canadian middle school system and ask what we can learn from our colleagues across the Atlantic.  We shall listen to the views of politicians and school leaders across the country and reinforce the crucial part that middle schools play in the lives of children.

Come to conference:

To explore issues that affect us as middle schools To learn from each other and from colleagues overseas   To hear speakers of national importance To spend time with colleagues and friends that work within the three tier system

2) Launch of New Forum Website

At the conference we will be launching a new website for the Forum. The website is often the first point of contact with other organisations and we hope that the new design, created in collaboration with a professional designer, will help to promote middle schools nationally, as well as providing improved services to our members.

Contributions needed in two areas:

1) The new website will incorporate a new area devoted to promoting careers in middle schools and recruitment. I am seeking a small number of ‘case studies’ – up to 200 words (plus photo if possible) from young teachers who describe the advantages of starting a career in middle schools…….Do you have a young teacher who might be prepared to write a short piece about themselves? If so please let me know and I will be happy to offer any support I can.

2) I need some photos of middles schools and middle school pupils to bring the site to life. Perhaps you have photos on your website or in your brochure that would be easy to send. Photos of pupils that illustrate some of the benefits of middle school education would be particularly helpful. Please send to me by email as attachments. The school will be acknowledged on the website.

Please respond if you can - you will be helping to convey important messages about the benefits a middle school education can offer.
